10 Scary water levels in video games

What is it with water and fear in video games? From shark invested oceans to underwater caverns with less light than a graveyard at night, here are 10 water-based levels sure to give you the heebie jeebies. Warning: This list contains some scary content, some of which isn't suitable for younger audiences. Viewer's discretion is advised.

#10: Banjo-Kazooie: Clanker's Cavern

Oh Rare, what have you done...

Like before, this is the least scary thing on the list as the titular character is harmless, but the initial shock of seeing Clanker's bloodshot eyes and razor sharp teeth after traveling through a long pipe leaves a lasting impact. Not only that, you have to go inside Clanker, where you'll find parasitic tentacles, spinning blades and far more blood than any game aimed at kids should be allowed to have.

#9: Super Mario 64: Jolly Roger's Bay

If this moment gave you PTSD, I apologize in advance.

One of the first worlds available in this childhood classic, this place seems like a peaceful one. Swim below the surface, however, and you risk meeting up with Unagi. This character is a massive, fierce looking eel that either hides in a cave or sunken pirate ship or swims around the bottom of the area. There is nothing you can do to hurt said eel and several of the level's missions force you to get close to it.

#8: Sonic Adventure 2: Aquatic Mine

Do Proton Packs work underwater?

Knuckles' search for the shattered Master Emerald eventually brings him to a flooded mine. Not only is the whole area full of cramped halls with no signs of life, the area is also home to ghosts with bright red eyes and sharp teeth who will ambush you at any given chance.

#7: Ecco The Dolphin: Final Level

Will you taste good? That is the question.

For the last level of this game, Ecco is forced to travel through a giant machine filled with narrow hallways and aliens who want nothing more than to eat him alive. If you manage to make it to the end, you'll run into a super dark room with a massive alien who will swallow Ecco whole if given the chance.

#6: Grand Theft Auto 5: The depths

Careful where you dive...

Grand Theft Auto 5 is to my knowledge the first game in the franchise that let you visit the ocean, and they do a good job at making it scary. Like in the real world, the deep depths of the oceans are really dark and seemingly endless. If you go too deep, the water pressure will crush both you and your chosen vehicle to death. Rumor has it there's a kraken living down there, just waiting for a chance to drag your character to an unfriendly death.

#5: Star Fox 64: Aquas

This ain't no Atlantis!

For this planet Fox has to travel through an dark, watery planet full of aquatic nightmares and hints of a long extinct civilization. According to the official strategy guide, the planet used to be teaming with life, but became a watery mass grave when the boss of the level (a colossal clam-like monster with a big green eye) manipulated the ocean life into melting the polar ice caps.

#4: Conker's Bad Fur Day: Clang's Lair

What is it with N64 games and giant metal fish?!

One section of the Bat Tower chapter forces Conker to swim through a flooded cavern. Not only is the cavern super dark and air pockets uncommon, the cavern is also populated by creatures called Clangs. These take the shape of large metal fish with large green eyes that try to ambush you when you least expect it.

#3: Amnesia the Dark Descent: Cellar Archives

Keep out of the water!

This cellar located in the basement of the house seems abandoned at first, but mere minutes after you enter you'll find yourself being stalked by an invisible monster who'll stop at nothing to tear you apart. Your only defense against it is to crawl onto some of the many pieces of furniture floating in the water.

#2: World of Warcraft: Upside Down Sinners

People who don't believe in God repent now or this may be your fate!

While traveling through the Forgotten Crypt you might just come across this room, which is full of human corpses floating upside down from chains. To further add to the creepiness, these bodies are lacking eyes and hands.

#1: Subnautica: Crater Edge

I don't think we're in the Bahamas anymore...

Admittedly much of this game could go on this list, but numero uno if you ask me is the edge of the crater area. This is a super dark area populated by Ghost Leviathans. For those wonder, those are colossal, glowing sea serpents that make an absolutely horrifying noise as they attack you.

There's another list for your game and/or fear loving sides. If you can think of any scary water levels I missed, you know what to do. Thanks for watching and have fun in your pools.

#10: Webkinz killer

Today your virtual pets. Tomorrow YOU!!!

He's looking at you pal!

Allegedly this is an edutainment game that was released in the 80s. The goal of it was to type in words to have a chef mix things in a bowl while eerie noises played in the background. The game was impossible to beat normally, but the story goes that a group of hackers tried to hack the game to do just that.

#8: Luigi's Mansion: Luigi's death

Gee that's not dark at all...

This theory proposes that Luigi is dead during the game. This theory came about because at one point in the game when E Gadd calls you, Luigi's shadow appears to be hanging from a noose.

#7: Fallout 3: Numbers station

This is one radio station you shouldn't tune into!

Supposedly in Fallout 3 there is a number station that's said to predict the future. Some of the events predicted by this number station include the death of Gary Coleman and the BP oil spill.

#6: Majora's Mask: Haunted Cartridge

Just when you thought the moon was the scariest thing this game had to offer.

Allegedly one unlucky individual found a cartridge of Majora's Mask that was haunted by the ghost of a kid named Ben who drowned in a lake. The individual taped some of the things he found on the cartridge and what he recorded is eerie to say the least.

#5: Super Mario 64: Wario Apparition

Quick! Use the Joestar Family Technique!

Among the many odd anomalies alleged to appear in certain copies of Super Mario 64, this is possibly the most well-known and scariest. It is an entity shaped like a giant Wario head that's said to appear in the entrance to Dire Dire Docks and chase Mario down the hallway. It's also said to induce stroke like symptoms to any players unfortunate enough to encounter it.

#4: Pokemon: Lavender Town Syndrome

May Arceus help you help...

Allegedly the original Japanese version of the Lavender Town theme had extra notes that only kids could hear. Legend says that kids who listened to this original version were driven to madness. Some of them even developed suicidal thoughts.

#3: Pale Luna

Advice: Go play I-Mockery's Select your Destiny games instead!

Allegedly this is a text-based adventure about a guy going through a forest looking for something. When beaten it showed a bunch of random numbers that when deciphered led players to the corpse of a little girl.

#2: Polybius

Keep your quarters far away from this game!

Supposedly there is a game in the 1980s made by the US government. Those who played it suffered various psychological effects, including nightmares, adversity towards video games and suicidal thoughts.

#1: Curse of Evil Otto

He's coming for you!

It is said that anyone who gets a high score on a Berzerk arcade cabinet will die shortly after. This legend started in 1982 after an unfortunate player died from a heart attack after playing the game.

Even if these are all just urban legends, it kinda makes you think, doesn't it. If you know of some eerie gaming myths that you thought should've been included, be sure to leave your suggestions in the comments section. Thanks for reading and be sure you lock your doors and windows tonight. You'll thank me when Herobrine comes for you.

15 Freaky af game over sequences in video games

Some games will make you dread getting a game over. Whether they laugh evilly at you, involve the playable character undergoing a horrible fate or straight up show the world coming to an end, here are 15 absolutely terrifying game over screens in video games. Warning: This list contains some gruesome, sometimes bloody scenes. Viewer's discretion is advised.

#15: Sonic CD (US)

Get a game over in the Japanese version of this game and you'll get an upbeat song. Get a game over in the US version, however, and you'll hear psychotic violin music and absolutely terrifying laughter.

#14: Final Fight series

Holy Ganster execution method, Batman!

Depending on the game you play, losing all your lives will result in your character of choice being tied up and either put in front of a lit bomb, placed in a room that's slowly flooding or located underneath a massive crusher with spikes on it.

#13: Conker's Bad Fur Day

You know a fate is horrific when even this game can't show it!

This game has multiple game over sequences: Depending on how you die, either Conker will be used to replace the missing table leg on one of the Panther King's tables, Conker's dismembered and bloody remains will be presented to the Panther King in a burlap sack or Conker's fate will be left unknown as the game closes in on a milk carton that says he's missing.

#12: Plants Vs Zombies

What you get for not bringing guns to a zombie apocalypse!

Should a zombie make it into the house, you'll hear the owner scream in fear and/or pain and get the message "The zombies at you brain!" The second game ups the ante by showing a brain on a plate with a huge bite taken out of it.

#11: Donkey Kong Country Series

That's gonna leave some marks!

Depending which game you play, losing to the Kremlins will net you an image of Donkey and Diddy in a dark room covered in bruises, Diddy and Dixie locked in a cell or Dixie and Kiddy trapped in a baby crib.

#10: Mortal Kombat 4

Three guesses on what happens if you don't hit continue...

Get killed during the MK Tournament and you'll witness your chosen character flailing helplessly as they plumet down a massive hole with large, sharp spikes at the bottom.

#9: Tecmo Knight

Somebody's hungry!

Lose all your lives in this arcade game and you'll witness your character in the jaws of a massive beast. If you don't put in any quarters your character's strength will fail and he'll be swallowed whole.

#8: Hong Kong 97

Should've got Bruce Lee to handle this invasion!

Die to the #&$*ing ugly reds invading Hong Kong and the last thing you see before the game ends is a bloody corpse lying on the ground accompanied by the phrase "Chin is dead!" While Nexpo found out the image is actually taken from a documentary and the body is most likely fake, it's still an unsettling image to end a game on.

#7: System Shock

It could be worse: He could be forced to watch Onision videos while he's in there!

Die at the hands of Shodan and the hacker will find himself being loaded into one of her machines, turning him into an unwilling pawn.

#6: Robinson's Requiem

"Go explore alien planets" they said. "You'll love it" they said. I would've preferred Great Wolf Lodge!

Succumb to the hostile alien planet and you'll witness Treplieve1's horrified face surrounded by skulls and fire, as if he wound up in Hell. On rare occasions Trepievel1's face will turn into a skull itself.

#5: Donkey Kong 64

This goes way beyond stealing DK's banana horde!

The original Donkey Kong Country games may've had some creepy game over screens, but this one is next level. Fail to stop King K. Rool's latest evil plan and you'll witness the reptilian tyrant laugh maniacally as he prepares to blow DK Island up with a powerful laser.

#4: Ninja Gaiden arcade

Even ninja's have their off days!

Lose all your lives in this notoriously hard game and you'll see Ryu Hyabusha strapped to a table, looking on in sheer terror as a giant sawblade slowly descends towards him. Even more disturbing, there are several demonic faces watching him meet his doom.

#3: Luigi's Mansion 3

Welcome to the trapped Nintendo character museum!

Succumb to the ghosts in this game and you'll witness Luigi and all his friends being trapped within paintings while King Boo admires his new gallery. As if that wasn't bad enough, he'll turn to the screen right before the sequence ends, almost like he's intending to attack the player next.

#2: Soma

Get caught by the monsters in this game and you'll be hit by a barrage of horrifying images, including what looks like a red robotic eye and a man with black sludge coming out of his eyes and mouth.

#1: Majora's Mask

Why didn't Ganon ever think of this?

Fail to stop the titular mask's evil plan and you'll witness the moon fall onto Termina, causing a massive shockwave that destroys everything in its path. The last part of the sequence shows Link looking at the destruction before he too is wiped out.

Those are some ways to make you regret failing to beat a game. If you can think of some horrific game overs I might've missed, feel free to leave some suggestions. Thanks for reading and have yet another happy Halloween.

15 Horrifying unused content in video games

Sometimes the scariest things in video games are stuff that never left the cutting room floor. Whether they be unused enemies that look like they belong in the SCP Foundation or Trevor Henderson Universe, nightmarish scrapped cutscenes or placeholders that have no business in these games, join me as we count down 15 things that were rightfully not included in these video games. Warning: This list contains some really messed up stuff. Viewer's discretion is advised.

#15: Knuckles Chaotix: Bloody skull

Whose skull is that?

Found with this game's files is this bloody skull with the word "tobu" written in Japanese under it. It's purpose is unknown.

#14: South Park the Stick of Truth: Pip's skull

Way to respect your dead, South Park!

Speaking of skulls, located in deep in the files of this game is the skull of Pip, an English child character who was killed off in South Parks fourteenth season. Even worse, it was apparently supposed to be a weapon.

#13: SpongeBob Saves the Day: Yummer

Hey look, the lost Flying Dutchman crewmate!

Located deep within the files of this game is this creepy looking face that appears to be partially hiding behind something. Fortunately, this was comfirmed to be nothing more than a placeholder.

#12: Race with Ryan: Creepy face

Was Ryan supposed to die at one point in this game?!

Hidden within the files of this game is a disturbing face with x eyes, a stitched mouth and red scribbles resembling blood. Even worse, this is located with the textures for Ryan's face.

#11: Cuphead: Beetrice Lutz/Betty Beet

This is messed up!

Located only in concept art, there is this unused beet enemy that appears to cry and attack by throwing her own offspring at the heroes. It is unknown why this boss was scrapped, though if I had to guess I'd say the concept was too dark for this game.

#10: Halo 2: Flood Infector

Just when you thought the Flood couldn't get more disgusting!

Found in The Art of Halo 3 artbook is this unused Flood form. Apparently it would've been able to regenerate its legs in seconds and would've spread Flood forms to take control over any nearby human or Covenant vehicles.

#9: Half-Life 2: Mr. Friendly

The Backrooms monsters are invading!

This alien was supposed to grab Gordon Freeman and induce "fatal copulation" unto him. Apparently Half-Life 2 was originally going to include sexual themes with some of its enemies to garner response from homophobic players.

#8: Left 4 Dead: The Screamer

Just what the zombie apocalypse needs!

Originally there was gonna be a special infected that would've screamed loudly to summon hordes of common infected. This monster was cut because he was deemed to difficult and confusing for new players to spot, so the horde summoning ability was given to the Boomer instead.

#7: Friday Night Funkin: Monster's original design

Just when you thought shadow people couldn't get scarier!

As scary as the Monster is, his beta design is much worse. Along with the blood red eyes and teeth, this thing is looks like a huge shadow and is sticking out of a bloody Jack-o-lantern.

#6: Luigi's Mansion: Elh.Spz

Who you gonna call?

Little is known about this twisted looking thing. Apparently it was supposed to be an enemy, as there are animations of it attacking and getting damage.

#5: Team Fortress 2: Afterburn death animations

Burn baby burn!

Added in the Pyromania updates were animations of the classes (sans the Pyro) flailing around before falling to the ground, possibly succumbing to afterburn. It's unknown why they were added or unused.

#4: Bully: Unused death scene

That's one way to get rid of somebody...

Originally when Jimmy was defeated at the chemical plant, a cutscene would've played showing Jimmy sinking into a pool of acid while Edgar mocked him.

#3: Conker's Bad Fur Day: Torture cutscene

Avert your eyes kids!

At one point when Conker infiltrated the Tediz base, he would've witnessed 2 Tediz dissecting an unfortunate squirrel soldier while he as alive and begging for mercy. Thankfully, this was replaced by a cutscene of 2 Tediz debating about the quality of the game before spotting Conker and getting "back into character".

#2: Mother 3: Unused boss

Ok, NOW we're getting scary!

Hiding deep within the files of Mother 3 are multiple backgrounds of an unused boss, including a distorted image of the games protagonist Lucas and the Giygas-like face above this paragraph. This boss is believed to be intended for a darker version of the final boss battle.

#1: Silent Hill series: Unused monsters

What is that thing?!

The Silent Hill series is host to a number of scrapped monsters, some of which could give Pyramid head a run for his money. Some examples include zombie miners with pickaxes for hands, human-like abominations fused with wheelchairs and living hunks of meat. For a complete list, click here.

You know, going through the scrapped and unused parts of games is quite interesting. You never know what you're gonna find.
